Students and staff from Collinsville High School are raising funds to erect a memorial in front of the school to honor the veterans of the Collinsville Community School District.
“We have raised over $2,000 from various donors so far,” social studies teacher and head of the democracy school team Barbara Lindauer said.
There are currently enough funds to erect a small statue but the group would like to build a more substantial monument, according to Lindauer.
“However, we are still fundraising and hope to raise even more in order to build a more substantial monument that even better honors the sacrifices and commitments of our community’s veterans,” Lindauer said.
The monument will be constructed near the main entrance of the high school, near the flagpole.
The project is among the school’s efforts after being named an official Illinois Democracy School earlier in the school year.
An Illinois Democracy School demonstrates a commitment to fostering educated, informed, and engaged citizens, according to organizers.
As part of their student engagement activities, the school organized a 9/11 tribute, and held mock elections and debates during the 2016 elections season.
Donations of any amount for the construction of the veterans memorial are welcome, according to Lindauer.
